BLUE_BOOST Project is participating at the Rome Maker Faire 2019: Maker Faire is the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earthabout invention, creativity and resourcefulness, and a celebration of the Maker Movement. In 2017, Maker Faire will celebrate 220+ Faires in 400 countries, reaching over 1.4 million attendees globally.
The European edition of Maker Faire is organised in Rome by InnovaCamera, a Special Agency of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, whose mission is to place the city of Rome at the centre of the debate on innovation, by spreading the digital culture, and developing the individual and collective entrepreneurship that is so integral to the Maker movement’s genetic makeup.
Maker Faire Rome combines science, science fiction, technology, entertainment and business to create something totally new. It’s an event created to cater to curious participants of all ages, wishing to experience first-hand the makers’ inventions. Inventions that are the result of a desire to solve everyday problems, whether big or small, as BLUE_BOOST did with the actors working in the Blue Economy sectors.
To this end, BLUE_BOOST partners have prompted the exchange of knowledge and technology between MSMEs/Start-Ups operating in the blue economy and new innovation agents such as coworking spaces, fab-labs, makerspaces, innovation hubs, tech-shops, etc. In addition to the organization of training courses on innovation processes, hackathons, brokerage events and exchange programs, BLUE_BOOST has launched an Innovation Vouchers Transnational Call for a total value of € 350,000 in favor of 35 small-scale innovation projects based on the collaboration between blue economy companies and innovation actors.
During the Maker Faire Rome, BLUE_BOOST partners will disseminate the results achieved and showcase the following projects funded with the BLUE_BOOST Innovation Vouchers:

Thanks to such modern technology, Zadar’s history seems closer than ever: a friendly assistant leads tourists from one point to another where they relive and get insight into Zadar’s historical episodes through amazing 360° visuals, 3D objects, high resolution animations, sound effects and intense virtual reality experience. Visitors will be able to enjoy the panoramic view of the Zadar’s peninsula from a hot-air balloon, stand in the center of antique Forum, discover how Zadar looked during bombing in World War II and many more experiences.
RHAPSODY IN BLUE – A STORYTELLING BOOK OF MY RECIPES presented by Mandarina Communication
The project, funded by a BLUE_BOOST Innovation Voucher, is implemented by Mandarina Communication in collaboration with Rapsodia Shpk: it is a combination of values and attributes, a collection of stories about inventing sea food recipes: inspired by the rhapsodies that combined the music notes by a natural gift, self-taught, the same this project aims to make immortal, to turn into a lively melody, in a living experience for anyone else, the recipes of popular cooking, spontaneous, autodidact, collected very carefully and passed more accurately by Chef Marku, winner of national and international prizes in culinary. The project will have an innovative design and promotion in order to involve and create benefit to the territory as well: Mandarina Communication, indeed, has a long experience in artistic design and Identity/Brand building for addressing new markets needs.
BOAT2B – BIO-BASED MATERIALS FOR BOATBUILDING presented by the University of Trieste
The project BOAT2B (Bio-based materials for boatbuilding), funded by a BLUE_BOOST Innovation Voucher, is implemented by the University of Trieste – Department of Engineering and Architecture (Integrated Ship Design LAB) in partnership with Alto Adriatico Custom, a shipyard based in Monfalcone (Gorizia). The project aims to test bio-based epoxy resins for techniques based on wood, thus introducing eco-friendly materials in the (wood) boatbuilding sector. The project will be presented at the Rome Maker Faire 2019 by the Integrated Ship Design LAB of the University of Trieste, also by displaying a set of samples. On the same occasion, the Integrated Ship Design LAB will present on video the project ZELAG (a prototype zero-emission boat for passenger transport in lagoon and shallow waters, funded by the OP ERDF 2014-2020 in Friuli Venezia Giulia ).
SEA READER presented by Apphia s.r.l.
SEA READER aims at creating an integrated innovative system for monitoring the marine environment and its health. In aquaculture sector, the system supports the farmer in the management and optimization of production and in the reduction of environmental impacts related to the management of the plants. The system integrates devices/buoys/sensors for the automatic acquisition of biological parameters in the immediate surroundings of the cages of aquaculture plants. Data consultation and a decision-making support are available via mobile devices. Apphia is an Italian engineering company specialized in research and development of innovative solutions for complex systems. Established in March 2011 as a spin-off company of the University of Salento, it is registered in the Special Section of Innovative SME. The team has strong skills in the acquisition and processing of data from different types of sensors, remote control of devices and representation of information useful to operators. In aquaculture sector, Apphia designs and develops innovative devices and sustainable smart solutions for monitoring of oxygen and ph in waters, waves and currents, temperature and the status of fish containment nets and anchors.
COATFISH – USE OF ANTIFOULING COATING IN NETTING TRAPS FOR THE COASTAL FISHERIES presented by the Icthyology Lab – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
The Icthyology Lab – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with DIOPAS SA is designing and testing some netting traps – static fishing gears, as the ones used in most small-scale fisheries, coated with antifouling substances with the aim of reducing marine growth on the gear’s net for the period that the gear is immersed in the sea. The main objective of the project is to improve the efficiency of netting traps, because biofouling decreases fish catching rates and complicates the fishing procedure mainly through adding extra weight while lifting the gears on- board. The main beneficiaries of this improved gear will be the coastal fishers especially those operating in highly eutrophic areas – such as the Thermaikos gulf, northern Greece- with increased biofouling rates in manmade structures. The results of this project are expected to enhance technological development and know-how in the fishing gear construction industry. This is particularly important for companies such as DIOPAS SA which provide the local communities of coastal fishers with a variety of fishing gears that need to be both efficient and environmentally friendly.
FISH4CATS – FIsherman’s Smart Helmet FOR preventing Cranial And eye TraumaS in aquaculture presentato da CNT Technologies S.r.l.
